“Amidst growing concerns over crime, a 28-year-old woman is brutally attacked by a colleague in front of bystanders who failed to intervene.”

January 9, 2025: In a tragic incident that has left Pune in shock, a 28-year-old woman, Shubhada Kodare, was brutally attacked with a cleaver by her colleague, Krishna Kanoja, in the parking lot of their office in Yerawada on Tuesday. Both Kodare and Kanoja worked at WNS Global, a business process outsourcing (BPO) company. According to the police, the attack stemmed from a financial dispute. Kanoja, 30, claimed that Kodare had borrowed money from him multiple times, citing her father’s poor health as the reason. When she refused to repay and Kanoja discovered her father was in good health, he felt betrayed.

On Tuesday evening, Kanoja confronted Kodare in the office parking lot, demanding his money back. The confrontation escalated into an argument, during which Kanoja attacked her with a cleaver. Witnesses in the parking lot reportedly watched the horrific act unfold, with some even recording it, but no one intervened until after the attack ended.

Kodare sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where she was declared dead around 9 PM. Kanoja was subdued by a crowd only after discarding the weapon. He has since been arrested, and a case has been registered against him.

The incident has sparked outrage, with many questioning the bystanders’ inaction and the growing prevalence of violent crimes in Pune. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar criticized the Pune Police for their inability to control rising crime rates. Pawar pointed to the increasing threat posed by ‘koyta’ gangs, which have been linked to recent violent incidents in the city.

The deputy chief minister stressed the need for accountability within the police force, stating, “If senior officers are unable to tackle the situation, they should admit it, and we will bring better officers to control crime.” He assured the public that the government is taking the issue seriously and will address the growing concerns over safety in Pune.
