SM Krishna, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka and a towering figure in Indian politics, passed away at the age of 92. Known for his instrumental role in transforming Bengaluru into a global technology hub, he breathed his last at his Bengaluru residence at around 2:45 am after battling health issues.
Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, SM Krishna leaves behind a legacy of leadership and innovation. From serving as the Chief Minister of Karnataka to holding key national roles such as External Affairs Minister and Governor of Maharashtra, his contributions to India’s political and technological landscape remain unparalleled.
A Legacy of Visionary Leadership
SM Krishna’s tenure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister (1999–2004) marked a turning point for Bengaluru, establishing it as the IT capital of India. Under his leadership, the city attracted global technology giants and fostered a thriving ecosystem for startups, earning it the moniker “Silicon Valley of India.”
Reacting to his demise, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow, stating, “His service as Chief Minister and Union Minister is unmatched. Karnataka will forever be indebted to him for his role in developing the IT-BT sector. Personally, he was a guide to me during my early days in the Congress.”
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also paid tribute, recalling their camaraderie: “Our friendship went beyond competition as we worked to attract investments to our states. He always prioritized the welfare of his people. My heartfelt condolences to his family.”
Academic and Political Milestones
SM Krishna graduated from Maharaja’s College, Mysuru, and earned a law degree from the Government Law College, Bengaluru. As a Fulbright Scholar, he studied at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, and George Washington University in the United States.
His political journey began in 1962 when he won the Maddur assembly seat as an Independent, defeating Congress heavyweight KV Shankar Gowda. In 1968, he entered Parliament by winning the Mandya by-election but returned to state politics in 1972. He rejoined the Lok Sabha in 1980.
Initially affiliated with the Praja Socialist Party, Krishna joined the Congress in 1971 and rose to prominence. As the Karnataka Congress chief, he led the party to victory in 1999, becoming the state’s Chief Minister. He later served as Maharashtra’s Governor (2004–2008) and India’s External Affairs Minister (2009–2012).
In his later years, SM Krishna joined the BJP, marking a new chapter in his illustrious political career.
