Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi has ignited a fresh political debate regarding the government’s upcoming special session of Parliament. In a detailed article published in The Hindu, Gandhi argued that while the discourse has focused heavily on the women’s reservation quota, the “real controversy” and more pressing threat lies in the reported plans for delimitation—the process of redrawing parliamentary constituencies.

Gandhi expressed grave concerns that a mathematical approach to increasing the strength of the Lok Sabha could lead to a significant constitutional imbalance. She warned that redrawing boundaries based strictly on population figures without considering political fairness would be “extremely dangerous” and characterized the move as an “assault on the Constitution.” Her remarks come at a time when Southern states have expressed fears that their representation could shrink relative to Northern states due to their successful population control measures.

The veteran leader’s intervention follows a similar warning from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who recently cautioned the Centre against using women’s quotas as a strategic move that might violate the Model Code of Conduct. By shifting the focus to delimitation, the Congress leadership is signaling a push for a deeper debate on federalism and the long-term impact of constituency redrawing on India’s democratic structure before the special session commences.
