Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi and other top leaders lead aggressive outreach as Assam heads to polls

April 7, 2026: Top leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress intensified their campaign across Assam, holding rallies and roadshows to woo voters. Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda and Nitin Nabin led the BJP’s campaign, while Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra campaigned for the Congress and its allies.

Leaders from other parties also joined the campaign trail, including Asaduddin Owaisi and Hemant Soren. On Tuesday, Amit Shah addressed rallies in Patharkandi, Hailakandi and Cachar, while Kharge held a press conference in Guwahati. The election has drawn significant attention with 722 candidates in the fray, including 59 women, reflecting a competitive political contest.

Assam has over 2.5 crore eligible voters, including more than 6.4 lakh first-time voters aged 18-19. Special arrangements include over 31,000 polling stations, with some managed entirely by women and persons with disabilities. Key constituencies to watch include Jalukbari, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is seeking re-election, Jorhat with Gaurav Gogoi in the fray, and Sibsagar where Akhil Gogoi is contesting.
