New Delhi [India]: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday attacked Union Minister Amit Shah over his remarks concerning India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru during debate on J-K bills in Parliament and said the senior BJP leader “is unaware of history” and “has a habit of rewriting it”.
Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament, Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP-led government of trying to distract attention from real issues.
“Pandit Nehru gave his life for India, he was in jail for years. Amit Shah ji is unaware of history. I cannot expect him to know history, has a habit of rewriting it,” Rahul Gandhi said answering queries.
He said the basic issue is caste-based census and who is getting people’s money.
“They do not want to discuss this issue, they run away from this. We will take this issue forward and make sure that the poor get what they deserve…Even our CM in Chhattisgarh was from the OBC, they too announced an OBC CM, but the question is what percentage of them are in the structure?
PM Modi is from the OBC category but the government is run by 90 people and only 3 out of them are from OBC community and their offices are in a corner. My question is about the participation of OBCs, Dalits and tribals in the institutional system. They talk about Jawaharlal Nehru and others to distract us from this issue,” he said.
The Congress leader said that question is about institutional participation.
He said to distract from the main issue, “they will distract 24 hours, sometimes they will speak about Jawaharlal Nehru, sometimes about others, the issue is of participation”.
During debate on the two bills related to Jammu and Kashmir in Parliament, Amit Shah accused Nehru of “blunders”.
Speaking in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, the Home Minister said Nehru had “accepted his mistake” regarding the ceasefire during the war with Pakistan in 1948 and of taking the Kashmir issue to the United Nations.
“After the experience of United Nations, I have come to the conclusions that no satisfactory results can be expected from there. I considered the ceasefire decision a good one, but we could not deal with this matter well.
We should have had more thoughts on the ceasefire and taken it late. Though, these are the mistakes of the past,” the Home Minister quoted Nehru as saying.
“This quote is of Jawaharlal Nehru. Unko toh manoge ya nahi manoge ki unhone galti ki. (Will you accept this or not that he made a mistake),” Shah asked Congress members.
