The Asam Assembly election witnessed a strong wave of voter participation, with the state recording an overall turnout of 85.17%, the highest in the last four assembly elections. Despite challenging weather conditions in some regions, voters turned out in large numbers, forming long queues at polling booths throughout the day.

Polling for all 126 constituencies was conducted in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. Election officials described the process as largely peaceful and well-managed.

Top Performing Districts and Constituencies

Among districts, South Salmara-Mankachar emerged as the highest with an impressive 95.13% turnout, while West Karbi Anglong recorded the lowest at 74.31%.

At the constituency level, Sirajganj (Bongaigaon district) reported the highest polling at 95.49%, reflecting strong grassroots participation.

Upper Assam regions such as Jorhat, Dibrugarh, and Sivasagar also witnessed consistently high turnout, continuing their trend of active electoral engagement.

Key Seats and Voter Participation

  • Jalukbari, represented by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma recorded a turnout of 81.54%. He is contesting against Bidisa Neog of the Indian national congress.
  • In Dispur, a key battleground between Congress candidate Mira Borthakur and BJP’s Prodyut Bordoloi, polling stood at 74.45%.
  • Jorhat saw a high-profile triangular contest involving Gaurav Gogoi (Congress), Hitendra Nath Goswami (BJP), and the Aam Admi party, with a turnout of 78.26%.

Why Was Turnout So High?

Officials credited the surge in participation to:

  • Increased voter awareness campaigns
  • Better polling infrastructure
  • Smooth and peaceful voting conditions

Compared to previous elections, many constituencies reported a noticeable rise in voter engagement, signaling growing political awareness among citizens.
