BJP’s Sukanta Mazumdar Condemns Maligning of Victim’s Family in RG Kar Rape-Murder Case, Calls for Justice
Kolkata, January 30: West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Mazumdar has condemned the maligning of the victim’s family in the RG Kar rape-murder case, stating that he will visit them to express solidarity and demand justice.
Mazumdar further alleged that critical evidence was destroyed during the first five days of the investigation under the Kolkata police, raising concerns about compromised justice.
“It is shameful to malign the family. That is why I will go to their house and meet them. For five days, when Kolkata police were investigating the case, evidence was destroyed, and as a result, justice was not served as it should have been,” Mazumdar stated.
On Wednesday, the victim’s parents withdrew their plea before the Supreme Court, which sought a fresh investigation into the case.
🔹 The plea was originally filed as an Intervention Application (IA) in a suo motu case taken up by the Supreme Court in August 2023, shortly after the incident.
🔹 The Court advised Senior Advocate Karuna Nundy to withdraw the plea and file a fresh one, noting that it had been submitted before the trial and conviction of Sanjoy Roy, the sole accused in the case.
On January 20, 2024, a Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court sentenced Sanjoy Roy to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of the victim.
However, the verdict has sparked widespread public outrage, especially among doctors and medical professionals, who are demanding:
⚖ The death penalty for Roy due to the gruesome nature of the crime.
⚖ A reinvestigation into concerns over flaws in the initial probe by the Kolkata police.
With tensions rising over the handling of the case, calls for accountability and justice continue to dominate West Bengal’s political and legal discourse.
