Delhi Freezes As Temperature Dips To 4 Degree Celsius

December 12, 2024: Delhi experienced a significant chill on Thursday as the minimum temperature dropped to 4.5°C, while the maximum temperature reached 23°C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A thin layer of fog covered parts of the city early in the morning, adding to the cold conditions.

A thin layer of fog covered parts of Delhi, affecting visibility in some areas. Smog levels are expected to decrease by the evening, as northwest winds are forecasted to blow at 8 kmph, picking up to 16 kmph in the afternoon, helping to clear the air.

Delhi is expected to experience cold conditions under a clear sky. Cold wave conditions are likely to persist for a short period, with Delhi under the influence of cold weather until December 13.

The cold wave continues to affect North India and several parts of the country:

Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, and Delhi (Dec 12-13) are expected to experience cold wave conditions.

Jammu and Kashmir is likely to see a cold wave until Dec 16.

Srinagar recorded -3°C on Wednesday, with the Kashmir Valley facing below-freezing temperatures and impacting daily life.

Shimla and its surrounding regions are also experiencing icy conditions due to a fresh spell of snowfall. This has created significant challenges for local residents, with colder temperatures impacting daily routines and travel.

There is a likelihood of dense fog in isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland during the night and morning hours.

Mumbai also witnessed moderate air quality, with a smog layer reported in several areas, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. Smog and fog have been common in various parts of India as winter conditions intensify.

Delhi residents are advised to stay warm, especially during the early morning and late evening hours when the temperature is at its lowest. Those in need can seek refuge at night shelters set up by local authorities to offer warmth during the cold nights.

The cold wave and fog conditions are expected to ease in the coming days as weather patterns shift, but temperatures across many parts of India are likely to remain low, especially in North India, until mid-December.
