Delhi’s Air Quality Improves, CAQM Lifts GRAP Stage-III Restrictions

AQI Drops to 286, Favorable Weather Conditions Aid Pollution Dispersion

New Delhi, February 3: In a major relief for Delhi-NCR residents, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has lifted Stage-III restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) with immediate effect as air quality in the capital showed significant improvement.

The decision was taken after Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 286 on February 3, 2025, which is 64 points below the threshold of 350 required for Stage-III measures, in accordance with Supreme Court directives.

Why CAQM Lifted Stage-III Restrictions?

According to the official order issued by RK Agrawal, Director (Technical) and Member Convenor of the GRAP sub-committee, the improving air quality and favorable weather conditions prompted the rollback of stringent pollution-control measures.

“Owing to improvement in mixing height and ventilation coefficient and much favorable meteorological conditions for dispersion of pollutants, the AQI of Delhi has shown a significant improvement,” the order stated.

Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light rain and drizzle in the coming days, which is expected to further aid in reducing pollution levels.

What Does the Decision Mean for Delhi-NCR?

  • Stage-III restrictions lifted: Construction, demolition, and industrial activities that were restricted can resume, except for sites that had specific closure orders due to violations.
  • Stages I and II remain in effect: Measures under Stages I and II of GRAP will continue, with strict enforcement by the authorities.
  • Continuous monitoring: If AQI crosses 350, Stage-III curbs will be immediately reimposed. If AQI exceeds 400, the stricter Stage-IV restrictions will be reintroduced.

Current Air Quality Status

As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category on Monday, with an AQI of 286 at 4 PM. Despite the improvement, authorities continue to monitor pollution levels closely to prevent further deterioration.

With favorable weather conditions and strict implementation of GRAP measures, Delhiites can hope for further relief in the coming days.
