Himachal Pradesh Shivers as Cold Wave Intensifies, Authorities Gear Up for Festive Tourist Influx

Shimla records 2°C as higher-altitude areas plunge into sub-zero temperatures; administration issues advisories for smooth travel and safety.

Shimla, December 25: The cold wave gripping Himachal Pradesh has intensified, with Shimla recording a minimum temperature of 2°C and higher-altitude regions plunging well below freezing. The icy conditions have disrupted daily life, posing challenges for both residents and tourists as the festive season approaches.

In the tribal regions of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur, temperatures have hit extreme lows. Tabo recorded a bone-chilling -10.6°C, while Kukumseri saw -8.2°C, and Kaza registered -6.9°C. Kalpa recorded -4°C, and Rekong-Peo reported -0.9°C. Popular tourist spots like Kufri and Narkanda also saw freezing temperatures at 0.1°C and -2.8°C, respectively.

Locals have been grappling with the harsh weather conditions. Rajesh, a resident of Shimla, shared his struggles: “The cold has become unbearable, and even water has frozen, making daily tasks difficult.”

Administration Steps Up Efforts

To address challenges posed by the cold and ensure smooth traffic movement during the festive season, the Shimla district administration has ramped up its efforts. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anupam Kashyap highlighted ongoing initiatives:

“The main roads in and around Shimla blocked by snowfall have been cleared. In areas with heavy snow accumulation, additional machinery and manpower have been deployed. Tourists and locals must exercise caution, especially on slippery roads.”

Traffic and Tourist Management for Festive Season

With Christmas and New Year drawing closer, the administration has implemented strict traffic management measures. Shimla has been divided into traffic zones, and parking restrictions have been imposed on narrow roads to prevent congestion.

“We’ve deployed additional resources for traffic management, and advisories have been issued to tourists. Routes are being diverted based on weather conditions to ensure smooth movement,” said DC Kashyap.

The administration has urged tourists to follow travel advisories and cooperate with local authorities. Kashyap added, “We hope visitors will enjoy their stay and carry fond memories of Shimla. With everyone’s cooperation, we can ensure a smooth and pleasant experience during this peak season.”

Weather Advisory for Tourists

Authorities have issued advisories urging visitors to plan their trips carefully, avoid risky routes, and stay updated on weather forecasts. Safety measures, including road clearance and emergency assistance, are being prioritized to minimize disruptions.

As Shimla gears up to welcome tourists for the Winter Carnival and festive celebrations, the focus remains on maintaining safety, easing traffic congestion, and offering visitors an unforgettable winter experience amid the breathtaking snow-covered landscape.
