Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday indicated that the strength of the Assam Legislative Assembly could rise from 126 to 189 seats, citing the implementation of women’s reservation as a key driver behind the potential expansion.

The Chief Minister made the announcement during a poll rally in Nazira in Sivasagar district, where he was campaigning for BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain.

63 Additional Seats on the Cards

Sarma said there is a “possibility” of adding 63 new seats due to women’s reservation, which would significantly reshape the state’s political landscape.

Linking the expansion to local concerns, he also promised to revive the abolished Amguri Assembly constituency.

“When that happens, we will revive the abolished Amguri seat again. During delimitation, one part of Amguri went to Sivasagar and one part to Nazira,” he told the gathering.

Assurance to Amguri Residents

Acknowledging sentiments in the region, the Chief Minister assured residents that no government offices would be shifted out of Amguri until the constituency is reinstated. He also hinted at setting up additional offices to maintain administrative presence in the area.

Focus on Nazira Electoral Battle

Shifting focus to the ongoing election, Sarma urged voters in Nazira to support Mayur Borgohain, emphasising the benefits of a “double-engine government” — where the same party governs both the state and the Centre.

“The double-engine government has delivered roads, welfare schemes, and transformation across Assam. Voting for Mayur Borgohain means continuing this progress,” he said.

High-Profile BJP vs Congress Face-Off

The Nazira seat is witnessing a closely watched contest between the BJP and Congress. Sitting MLA and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia is defending the seat against Borgohain.

Political observers say the contest could hinge on local anti-incumbency as well as development narratives, making it one of the key battles in the state’s electoral landscape.
