IMD issues RED ALERT for Kerala, Predicts Heavy Rains Till July 24; 9 States On Orange Alert — Weather Forecast Here

July 19, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Kerala today, warning of potential disruptions across several northern districts. The red alert is in place for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, indicating the likelihood of rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

According to the IMD, intense monsoon activity is expected to continue through the weekend, with widespread rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. The red alert urges residents to remain vigilant and take safety precautions as the weather system may lead to flooding, waterlogging, landslides, and traffic disruptions.

Districts on High Alert:

  • Malappuram
  • Kozhikode
  • Wayanad
  • Kannur
  • Kasaragod

Local authorities have been directed to activate emergency response protocols, and control rooms have been set up to monitor the situation round-the-clock. Disaster management teams are on standby, and evacuation plans are in place for vulnerable areas, especially hilly regions prone to landslides.

Public Advisory:

  • Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
  • Do not cross overflowing rivers or waterlogged areas.
  • Follow updates from the IMD and local administration.
  • Keep emergency kits and essential supplies ready.

Earlier this week, IMD had also issued orange and yellow alerts for other districts in Kerala, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state through the coming days.

This spell of heavy rainfall is being attributed to strong monsoon currents in the Arabian Sea and a developing low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, both of which are intensifying rain activity in southern India.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) is closely monitoring the weather patterns and has urged citizens to follow advisories strictly and avoid travel to hilly and coastal regions unless absolutely necessary.
