A 16-year-old girl from the Chakradharpur sub-division of West Singhbhum district allegedly fell victim to human traffickers and was sold for ₹25,000 in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Monday. Officials also confirmed that the minor was subjected to physical torture during her captivity.

Police have rescued the girl and arrested two accused in connection with the case.

Girl Lured After Argument With Sister

According to officials at Chakradharpur Police Station, the incident took place on January 20 this year.

Officer-in-Charge Awadesh Kumar said the girl was on her way to school with her elder sister when an argument broke out between them over certain issues. Following the dispute, the girl left her sister midway and headed alone to the Chakradharpur Railway Station.

At the station, an unidentified tout noticed the girl alone and lured her with promises of employment and a better life.

“The accused convinced the girl to accompany him by promising her a job and painting a picture of a better life,” the police officer said.

The girl then travelled with the suspect by train to Uttar Pradesh.

Minor Allegedly Sold In Sitapur For ₹25,000

Police said the trafficker took the minor to Inayatpur area in Sitapur district, where he contacted a man identified as Kishori Lal Kuiri.

Kuiri then allegedly informed his neighbour Sandeep Kumar about the girl being brought for sale.

According to investigators, Sandeep Kumar mortgaged a plot of land measuring about 2.5 decimal to arrange funds and allegedly purchased the girl for ₹25,000.

Family Filed Missing Complaint After Weeks Of Search

After the girl went missing, her mother and sister conducted an extensive search. When their efforts failed, they filed a missing persons complaint on April 2 at Chakradharpur Police Station.

Police then launched an investigation using technical surveillance and local intelligence inputs to track the girl’s location.

Police Rescue Minor, Arrest Two Accused

Acting on gathered information, police traced the girl’s whereabouts to the accused’s residence in Uttar Pradesh.

A raid was conducted, leading to the rescue of the minor and the arrest of both accused — Sandeep Kumar and Kishori Lal Kuiri — on Sunday.

Officials confirmed that both accused were remanded to judicial custody on Monday.

Victim Reports Physical Assault, Burn Injuries Found

In her statement to police, the girl alleged that she had been subjected to continuous physical abuse during her captivity.

Authorities said burn marks were visible on several parts of her body, indicating severe torture.

“Burnt marks could be seen in various parts of her body. We are awaiting the medical examination report of the girl for confirmation of sexual assault, which the girl has claimed,” the police officer said.

The rescued minor is currently staying with her family while further medical examinations and legal procedures continue.

Investigation Continues To Trace Main Trafficker

Police officials said further action will be taken based on medical findings and ongoing investigation. Efforts are also underway to identify and arrest the unidentified tout who initially lured the girl from the railway station.

The case highlights the persistent threat of human trafficking networks that target vulnerable minors, often using false promises of jobs and better opportunities to exploit them.
