June 30, 2025: In a high-powered cabinet meeting held this morning, the Kerala government appointed DGP Ravada A. Chandrasekhar as the next State Police Chief, replacing Shaik Darvesh Saheb, who retired today. Chandrasekhar, a 1991-batch IPS officer serving as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau, was the second-most senior name on the central UPSC shortlist.
He was previously cleared for the powerful role of Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat, but the DGP appointment allows him a one-year extension under a Supreme Court directive that mandates a minimum two-year tenure for state police chiefs.
Chandrasekhar’s appointment comes amid significant interest due to his background, including a past assignment during the controversial 1994 Koothuparamba firing, where he faced criticism before being exonerated by the court. This could spark renewed debate, particularly from political leaders cautious of his record.
