Chennai: As Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 approach, election affidavits have revealed a sharp contrast in the financial backgrounds of candidates, with some declaring massive wealth while others report minimal assets.
Polling in the state is scheduled for April 23, with results to be announced on May 4. The political contest is primarily between the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the AIADMK-led NDA alliance, and the debuting Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
Vijay Emerges As Richest Candidate
Actor-turned-politician Vijay, who leads TVK, has emerged as the richest candidate in the fray. According to his affidavit, he has declared assets worth over ₹603 crore, including substantial bank deposits exceeding ₹213 crore.
His portfolio also includes luxury vehicles such as BMW, Lexus, and Vellfire models, reflecting a significant financial standing among contesting candidates.
Another prominent TVK leader, Aadhav Arjuna, contesting from Villivakkam, has declared assets worth ₹197.52 crore, including high-value movable and family-owned assets.
Meanwhile, Udhayanidhi Stalin has reported assets worth over ₹20.64 crore, notably higher than those declared by his father, Chief Minister M K Stalin.
Poorest Candidates Declare Minimal Wealth
On the other end of the spectrum, several independent candidates have declared extremely low assets, with some reporting wealth of ₹1,000 or less, according to data from the Election Commission of India.
Among them, Mohamed Mubarak, contesting from Ambur on a Social Democratic Party of India ticket, has declared assets worth approximately ₹6 lakh, placing him among the least wealthy candidates.
Stark Wealth Divide In Elections
The affidavit data highlights a significant wealth gap among candidates, underlining the diverse socio-economic backgrounds of those contesting the elections.
As Tamil Nadu gears up for a high-voltage political battle, these financial disclosures provide voters with deeper insights into the candidates’ backgrounds ahead of polling day.
