Tourist Entry Banned At Key Spots In Kodaikanal Amid Elephant Movement

July 3, 2025: In a move to prioritize public safety and prevent human-animal conflict, the Dindigul Forest Department has temporarily banned tourist entry at several popular locations in Kodaikanal due to heightened wild elephant activity.

Key tourist attractions including Guna Cave (Pillar Rock), Pine Forest, Moir Point, and Berijam Lake have been closed to visitors following multiple sightings of elephant herds frequenting these usually busy areas. The decision comes after concerns grew over the possibility of encounters between tourists and elephants, which could prove dangerous for both parties.

The forest department has ramped up patrols, erected barricades, and established checkpoints around the affected sites to enforce the ban and monitor elephant movement. Officials have urged tourists to refrain from visiting these places until further notice and to check with local authorities for the latest updates before planning trips.

“Elephant herds have been observed moving through these zones regularly over the past few days. We are taking precautionary measures to avoid any unfortunate incidents,” a forest officer told local media.

The ban is in effect until further notice, and authorities are working closely with wildlife experts to track the animals’ movements and assess the situation on a daily basis.

This is not the first time such a measure has been taken in wildlife-sensitive areas. Kodaikanal, a popular hill station in Tamil Nadu, often witnesses close proximity between wildlife and humans, especially during monsoon and harvest seasons when elephants stray into human settlements in search of food.

Tourists and locals alike are advised to stay alert, follow guidelines issued by the forest department, and respect wildlife boundaries to ensure their own safety and that of the animals.
