Police probe possible conspiracy after clashes erupt during late-night drive

January 7, 2026: Tension gripped parts of the national capital late last night after a demolition drive by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, backed by police, triggered stone-pelting by a section of the crowd. Bulldozers moved in to clear illegal encroachments but faced resistance, prompting police intervention. Videos showing attempts to incite unrest have surfaced, leading authorities to examine whether the violence was pre-planned.

Delhi Police confirmed that an FIR has been registered and an investigation is underway to probe the sequence of events. Officials said awareness campaigns and peace committee meetings were held in advance, which helped restrict the crowd size. Despite this, a small group allegedly created disturbances and was dispersed by security personnel.

MCD officials said the demolition was conducted at night to minimise traffic disruption in the busy area. Encroachments spread over about 36 square feet were removed, including a diagnostic centre, boundary walls and a banquet hall. Authorities clarified that a nearby mosque was not touched and remains secure, adding that no valid documents were produced to support claims over the disputed land.
