Sukanta Majumdar Alleges Mosque Loudspeaker Used to Incite Murshidabad Violence
Kolkata, April 16: In the wake of ongoing unrest in Murshidabad, West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar met DGP Rajeev Kumar at Bhawani Bhawan on Wednesday, accompanied by victims of the April 11 violence allegedly triggered by protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
Majumdar made explosive claims, alleging that the riot call was given via a mosque loudspeaker.
“According to the victims, the call for riots was given from the loudspeaker of the Masjid,” Majumdar said, holding the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government responsible for sheltering “fundamentalist elements.”
He further slammed cleric Tawha Siddique, calling his statements “provocative and shameful,” and blamed demographic shifts for what he described as a growing “communal mindset” in the region. Majumdar vowed that under a BJP-led state government, no religious space would be allowed to incite violence.
The Union Minister also claimed that many residents had fled violence-hit Shamsherganj and were now living in refugee camps in Malda, with 11 victims travelling to Kolkata to share their ordeal.
“PFI was active in Murshidabad. The police haven’t made any arrests yet in connection with their role,” he alleged.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari echoed similar sentiments, accusing the TMC leadership of orchestrating the riots for political gain. In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Adhikari named Md. Inzamul Haque, chairman of Dhulian Municipality, as a “direct instigator,” claiming he abused his official position and incited the crowd.
“From Mothabari to Dhulian, Trinamool leaders are the real conspirators. They are endangering Hindus while securing their vote bank,” Adhikari said, demanding immediate arrest and legal action.
So far, over 150 arrests have been made in connection with the Murshidabad violence, and additional police forces have been deployed across Samserganj, Dhuliyan, and nearby areas.
Amid mounting political tension, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee met with Muslim clerics in Kolkata, reportedly to de-escalate protests linked to the Waqf Act amendments.
