Top court raises concerns over data security and misuse of digital tools in justice delivery

April 12, 2026: Justice Rajesh Bindal on Sunday emphasised that artificial intelligence and digital tools should only serve as support mechanisms in the judicial system and must not override human reasoning. Speaking at a national conference on ‘Judicial Process Re-engineering and Digital Transformation’ in New Delhi, he highlighted the importance of maintaining the primacy of judicial thinking while adopting new technologies. He also cautioned against the risks associated with open-source platforms, particularly in relation to data confidentiality.

The two-day conference, organised by the Supreme Court eCommittee in collaboration with the Department of Justice, focused on integrating technology into judicial processes. Spread across five sessions, the discussions explored key areas such as digital transformation, efficiency in court systems, and the evolving role of technology in justice delivery. Justice Bindal reiterated that while technology can enhance efficiency, it cannot substitute judicial discretion.

Other senior judges, including J K Maheshwari and Sandeep Mehta, also addressed the gathering. Justice Maheshwari, in his valedictory speech, stressed the need for continuous judicial reforms and technological advancement, while Justice Mehta chaired a session highlighting innovations adopted by various high courts. The event saw participation from judges, IT committee members, and legal experts, reflecting a growing focus on modernising the justice system while safeguarding its core principles.
