BJP leader’s Guruvayur remarks trigger complaint

March 21, 2026: B Gopalakrishnan, the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Guruvayur, has stirred controversy after a video of his remarks went viral on social media. In the clip, he is heard making statements centred on religious identity, questioning the absence of a “Hindu MLA” in the constituency and urging voters to support him. The comments have drawn sharp criticism, with opponents accusing him of promoting communal messaging ahead of elections.

Following the backlash, the Kerala Students Union (KSU) lodged a formal complaint with the Thrissur police commissioner. The video quickly gained traction online, intensifying the political row and raising concerns over the use of religious references in an already sensitive electoral environment.

The constituency of Guruvayur holds major religious significance due to the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple, a prominent pilgrimage site. The electoral contest here involves candidates from key alliances, including the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), with rivals like NK Akbar and CH Rasheed also in the fray.
