‘The Constitution Is a Protective Shield, Not Just a Book to Be Touched’: Priyanka Gandhi

“Priyanka Gandhi accuses PM Modi of symbolic gestures and undermining justice, calling for the protection of India’s democratic values.”

New Delhi, December 13: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a sharp critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling government during her maiden speech in the Lok Sabha, accusing them of failing to uphold the principles of the Constitution while prioritizing corporate interests.

In a post on X, Priyanka Gandhi criticized PM Modi for his symbolic gestures, such as touching the Constitution to his forehead, while ignoring cries for justice in places like Sambhal, Hathras, and Manipur. “The Constitution is not just a book to be touched but a protective shield for justice, unity, and expression,” she stated.

Speaking during a discussion on the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, Priyanka paid tribute to the soldiers who defended Parliament during the 2001 attack. She described the Constitution as a “suraksha kavach” (protective shield) that safeguards citizens’ rights but accused the government of attempting to dismantle it over the past decade.

Priyanka alleged favoritism towards industrialist Adani, citing that apple growers in Himachal Pradesh and millions of citizens were suffering due to policies benefiting one individual. “Railways, airports, and cold storage facilities are all being handed over to one person, ignoring 142 crore Indians,” she said.

She also criticized the government for weakening the reservation system through lateral entry and privatization. “If it weren’t for the results of the Lok Sabha elections, they would have started changing the Constitution itself,” she asserted, adding that citizens’ commitment would protect it.

Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, lauded Priyanka’s debut speech. Rahul described it as “better than my maiden speech,” while Sonia called it “excellent.” Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge praised her for presenting facts and addressing critical issues like justice and women’s safety.

Her husband, Robert Vadra, expressed pride in her performance, saying, “She spoke clearly about the challenges faced by people across the country. Congress will move forward strongly.”

The speech marks Priyanka Gandhi’s first appearance in the Lok Sabha, symbolizing a significant moment for the Congress party during the winter session of Parliament, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution.
