Women accuse Lalitpur resident of serial marriages, dowry fraud and abandonment

February 6, 2026: A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district has come under police investigation after three women accused him of marrying each of them separately over six years, taking dowry each time and later forcing them out of his home. The accused, Sunil Kumar of Lalitpur, is now alleged to be planning a fourth marriage, prompting the three women to come together and approach the police jointly. On Thursday, they submitted written complaints to the Jhansi Senior Superintendent of Police, accusing Sunil of fraud, dowry harassment, domestic violence and abandonment. The women alleged that he concealed his earlier marriages while entering new ones, keeping them unaware of each other for years.

According to the complaints, the first marriage took place in 2019, with the woman’s family spending nearly Rs 8 lakh, including cash and jewellery. She alleged that soon after the wedding, Sunil began demanding additional dowry and subjected her to harassment, eventually driving her away. In 2021, Sunil allegedly married a second woman in a nearby village, with her family also spending around Rs 8 lakh, unaware of his previous marriage. She claimed she was assaulted and expelled from the house after refusing demands for a gold chain and a motorcycle.

The third marriage reportedly occurred in 2023, following the same pattern of dowry demands. The third woman alleged that the abuse intensified after she became pregnant and that she was eventually abandoned, later giving birth to a daughter at her maternal home. It was only after this that she learned about the other two marriages and decided to join them in filing complaints. Police said a case is being registered and the accused will be arrested, with investigations underway into charges of bigamy, dowry-related offences and domestic violence.
