One of the victims hailed from Salem, Tamil Nadu. Allegations of police negligence in managing the crowd have been raised by some devotees. Locals further complained about the absence of ambulance drivers, causing delays in shifting the injured to medical care.
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Board Chairperson, BR Naidu, dismissed any conspiracy and termed the incident an accident. “I had suspected something could go wrong and warned officials not to take it easy. There were rumors that not everyone might be allowed in Tirumala, which contributed to the chaos,” Mr. Naidu stated.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, saying, “Pained by the stampede in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts are with those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover soon.”
