52 female candidates fielded as Mamata strengthens gender-focused poll strategy
March 18, 2026: The Trinamool Congress has made a strong political statement by fielding 52 women candidates out of 291 for the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal. The move reinforces the party’s continued emphasis on gender representation, with women accounting for around 18 per cent of its total candidates. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the party has consistently promoted women’s participation in politics.
This focus on women is part of a broader political approach rather than a one-time decision. Over the years, the TMC has steadily increased opportunities for women leaders, making gender inclusivity a core part of its identity. The trend was also visible in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where nearly 38 per cent of the party’s MPs were women—among the highest in Parliament—highlighting a consistent strategy across elections.
The current list features a mix of experienced leaders and fresh faces from across the state, reflecting both diversity and balance. By giving significant representation to women, the TMC aims to strengthen its connect with voters and position itself as a leader in inclusive politics. As the high-stakes election approaches, this women-centric strategy is expected to play a key role in shaping the campaign narrative.
