Anti-incumbency clouds LDF prospects ahead of 2026 elections

April 4, 2026: A fresh Lok Poll survey ahead of the Kerala Assembly Elections 2026 indicates a clear advantage for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), suggesting a possible shift in the state’s political landscape. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), appears to be facing growing anti-incumbency after a decade in power. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, is projected to remain a marginal player with limited gains.

According to the survey, the UDF is expected to win 77–81 seats in the 140-member Assembly with a vote share of 42–44%, while the LDF may secure 58–62 seats with 39–41% vote share. Regional trends show UDF gaining in north and central Kerala, including districts like Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Ernakulam, driven by consolidation among minority communities and agrarian distress. Meanwhile, the LDF retains pockets of strength in areas like Kannur and Palakkad.

In southern districts such as Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, the contest remains more balanced, though the UDF is gaining traction among key voter groups. Factors such as corruption allegations, farmer distress, and dissatisfaction among traditional LDF supporters appear to be driving the shift. While the BJP has made limited inroads, the survey suggests the UDF is building momentum, though the final outcome will depend on campaign dynamics in the coming weeks.
