Under Performing Employees Forced to Walk on Knees, Lick Coins: Kerala Firm Accused of Inhuman Punishment

Labour Department and Human Rights Commission launch probe after shocking visuals of workplace harassment surface in Kochi.

April 6, 2025: Outrage in Kerala as Employees Forced to Crawl, Lick Coins in Workplace Abuse Case

A private marketing firm in Kaloor, Kochi, is under intense scrutiny after disturbing visuals emerged showing underperforming employees being subjected to degrading punishments—forced to crawl on their knees like chained dogs and lick coins off the floor.

The shocking footage, aired by local television channels, triggered an immediate response from Kerala’s Labour Department. State Labour Minister V Sivankutty condemned the incident as “shocking and disturbing,” ordering an urgent probe and directing the district labour officer to file a report.

The incident reportedly occurred at a location near Perumbavoor, possibly in a sub-firm affiliated with the Kaloor-based company. In the visuals, a man is seen crawling on his knees while another holds him on a leash, mimicking the treatment of a dog.

Former employees told media outlets that those who failed to meet performance targets were regularly subjected to such humiliating punishments by company management.

Police officials have confirmed they have not received any formal complaint yet. The owner of the Kaloor firm has denied involvement, suggesting the incident may have taken place at a separate marketing outfit that distributed their products.

“No case has been registered so far, but an investigation is underway,” a police officer said.

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, following a complaint from High Court lawyer Kulathoor Jaisingh. The Kerala State Youth Commission has also registered its own case and has directed the District Police Chief to submit a detailed report.

“Young workers must be treated with dignity. Legal action should be taken to prevent such practices in a civilised society,” said Commission Chairman M Shajar in a statement, urging collective social condemnation.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident to determine accountability and ensure such abuse does not recur.
