US Issues Level-2 Travel Advisory For India

June 22, 2025: The United States has issued a Level-2 travel advisory for India, urging American citizens to “exercise increased caution” due to heightened concerns over crime and terrorism. The advisory, released by the US State Department on June 16, underscores safety risks in specific regions and imposes travel restrictions for US government personnel.

The alert cites an uptick in violent crimes, particularly sexual assaults in crowded public areas and tourist hubs. “Rape is one of the fastest-growing crimes in India,” the statement noted. It also warned that terror attacks may occur without warning, especially near markets, transport centers, and government facilities.

Several states and regions—including rural stretches of eastern Maharashtra, northern Telangana, western West Bengal, and the Northeast—were flagged as high-risk. Travel beyond capital cities in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Meghalaya, and parts of Madhya Pradesh requires special clearance for US government employees. Jammu & Kashmir, the India-Pakistan border, and Manipur are among the areas requiring heightened caution.

The advisory discourages solo travel, especially for women, and notes the legal risks associated with carrying prohibited equipment. “Possession of satellite phones or GPS tracking devices is illegal in India and may result in a fine of up to USD 200,000 or up to three years in prison,” it warned.

Americans visiting India are advised to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and maintain regular contact with the US Embassy or Consulates.

This advisory is part of broader efforts by Washington to keep its citizens informed of international risks and evolving security threats.
