US Supreme Court Approves Extradition of 26/11 Convict Tahawwur Rana to India

Rana’s final appeal dismissed as India moves closer to bringing him to justice for the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

January 25, 2025: The US Supreme Court has cleared the path for the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a convict in the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks, to India. The court dismissed his review petition, marking the end of his legal avenues to avoid extradition.

Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, is wanted in India for his alleged involvement in facilitating the 2008 attacks in Mumbai. This decision comes after Rana lost multiple legal battles in US federal courts, including the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco.

On November 13, 2024, Rana filed a “petition for a writ of certiorari” with the US Supreme Court. However, the top court denied the petition on January 21, a day after Donald Trump was sworn in as the President of the United States.

“Petition DENIED,” the Supreme Court said in its ruling.

Rana is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles. With the court’s decision, Indian authorities are expected to expedite the legal formalities for his extradition to face trial in India.

Rana’s extradition is a significant step for India in holding accountable those involved in orchestrating the 26/11 attacks, which claimed over 160 lives and left hundreds injured.
