Traffic snarls, flight delays, and power outage risks grip the capital as IMD issues fresh warnings for Delhi-NCR amid ongoing rains and squally winds.

Residents across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to heavy rainfall and waterlogged streets on Friday morning, bringing much-needed relief from the summer heat but creating widespread chaos on the roads.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the city is likely to witness moderate to intense rainfall, accompanied by 40–90 kmph gusty winds and thunderstorms through the morning.

📍 Waterlogged Hotspots and Traffic Trouble

News agency ANI reported waterlogging at several key locations, including:

  • Lajpat Nagar
  • Minto Road underpass
  • Dwarka underpass
  • Khanpur
  • DND Flyway

Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel due to severely clogged roads and reduced visibility. Videos show vehicles navigating knee-deep water while traffic slows to a crawl in affected zones.

⚠️ IMD’s Red Alert & Safety Advisory

The IMD has issued a red alert for Delhi and its surroundings, warning that storms may cause damage to power and communication lines due to uprooted trees and broken branches.

Hailstorms, which have already occurred in parts of NCR, could damage crops and injure people or animals caught in open spaces.

👉 Residents are advised to:

  • Stay indoors and avoid travel
  • Keep windows and doors shut
  • Unplug electronic appliances
  • Avoid sheltering under trees or near metal poles
  • Exit water bodies immediately
  • Avoid lying on concrete floors or touching concrete walls

🛫 Delhi Airport Issues Advisory

Flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport have been impacted due to thunderstorms.

“Due to inclement weather conditions and thunderstorms in Delhi, some flights have been impacted… Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information,” said DIAL in an official update on X (formerly Twitter).

Airlines such as Air India and IndiGo also issued separate advisories urging passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport.


🔮 What’s Ahead?

The IMD predicts continued rainfall and thunderstorms throughout Friday and Saturday, with gusty winds expected to persist. The maximum temperature will likely remain below 40°C, offering some respite from the recent heatwave.

However, officials are on alert for further weather-related disruptions, and citizens are urged to remain vigilant.
