TVK eyes solo fight as candidate list hints at Chennai-focused strategy

March 18, 2026: The proposed candidate list of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has offered the clearest glimpse yet into actor-turned-politician Vijay’s electoral strategy ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April 23. Vijay is expected to contest from Perambur, marking his high-profile political debut, while senior leader Pussy N. Anand may be fielded from T. Nagar and Adhav Arjuna from Villivakkam. The party is likely to release its first official list around March 18.

Positioning itself as an alternative force, TVK is set to contest independently, distancing itself from alliance politics. The party has denied any tie-up with the National Democratic Alliance, even as rivals like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have built strong coalitions. Candidate selection has been closely overseen by Vijay himself, with multiple rounds of interviews conducted after applications closed in February.

Chennai has emerged as the strategic battleground for TVK, with several key leaders likely to contest from urban constituencies. The move reflects a calculated push to tap into urban voters and Vijay’s strong fan base. With plans to contest all 234 seats, TVK’s debut has generated significant buzz, though the absence of alliances could pose challenges in a state long dominated by Dravidian heavyweights.
