Chandigarh Police take Vinod Sehwag into custody; faces over 170 similar cases, bail hearing set for March 10.

Chandigarh: Vinod Sehwag, the brother of former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, has been arrested by Chandigarh Police in connection with a ₹7 crore cheque bounce case. A local court has remanded him to judicial custody as legal proceedings unfold.

The Case: Jalta Food and Beverages Company

The case is linked to Jalta Food and Beverages Company, where Vinod Sehwag, Vishnu Mittal, and Sudhir Malhotra served as directors.

According to Krishna Mohan, the owner of Shri Naina Plastic Factory in Himachal Pradesh’s Baddi, the company purchased goods from his factory and issued a ₹7 crore cheque for payment.

However, when the cheque was deposited at Oriental Bank of Commerce (Manimajra branch), it bounced due to insufficient funds.

Legal Proceedings and Arrest

  • After non-payment, Krishna Mohan filed a case against the three directors.
  • The court declared them fugitives in 2022 and issued orders for a police case in September 2023 after they failed to appear for hearings.
  • Chandigarh Police arrested Vinod Sehwag, while details regarding the other two accused remain unclear.

Bail Hearing and Multiple Cases

Vinod Sehwag has filed a bail application, which is set for hearing on March 10.

Notably, he faces at least 174 cheque bounce cases, with bail requests submitted in 138 cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

With legal proceedings underway, the case has drawn significant public and media attention due to his connection with the former Indian cricketer.
