Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleges serious flaws in voter roll revision, demands poll delay to ensure fair elections.
April 12, 2026: Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India and the West Bengal government, alleging that failures in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise have made common voters the “worst casualty.” Contesting from Berhampore, he argued that free and fair elections are impossible without accurate and transparent electoral rolls, citing constitutional guarantees under Article 326.
Chowdhury claimed that irregularities in voter list preparation have compromised the integrity of the electoral process. He stressed that without credible electoral rolls, the very foundation of democracy is weakened, and questioned the conduct of authorities overseeing the revision exercise.
He further proposed postponing the elections until a transparent revision is completed, urging intervention from constitutional bodies, including the Supreme Court of India. His remarks come amid heightened political tensions ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, scheduled in two phases on April 23 and 29.
