Weather Alert Latest! IMD Issues Red Alert for Kerala and Maharashtra, Light Rain in Delhi

Southwest Monsoon arrives early in Kerala; heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds expected in multiple states.

May 25, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for several districts in Kerala and Maharashtra, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds as the southwest monsoon arrives earlier than usual.

The monsoon reached Kerala on May 24, marking the earliest onset over the Indian mainland since 2009. IMD officials confirmed that the monsoon is active in South India, creating favorable conditions for its arrival in Maharashtra soon.

Key Weather Updates:

  • Kerala: Red alerts have been issued for Kasaragod and Kannur, while districts like Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are under orange alert for the next three days.
  • Maharashtra: Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts are on red alert due to a depression system that has triggered heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Satara and Kolhapur are also under red alert.
  • Karnataka: Coastal and southern Karnataka are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from May 24 to 27. Northern Karnataka will also see significant rainfall.
  • Delhi: After heavy rain and thunderstorms late Saturday, the city faces light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds on May 25. Wind speeds are expected to reach 30-40 kmph, peaking at 50 kmph during storms.
  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal: Extremely heavy rainfall is forecast for May 25 and 26.
  • Northeast India: Rainfall is expected until May 30 in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Assam and Meghalaya may face very heavy rain on May 29 and 30.
  • Central and East India: Moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are expected in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal, with Bihar potentially facing winds up to 70 kmph on May 25 and 26.
  • North India: Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds is forecast for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh until May 30.

IMD has also advised fishermen in Maharashtra to avoid venturing out to sea due to rough conditions.

As the monsoon progresses, residents in affected areas are urged to remain cautious and stay indoors during intense weather activity.
