Weather Report: IMD Forecasts Widespread Rain, Heatwave Relief in Delhi

Thunderstorms and rain expected across South, Central, and Northeast India over the next five days; Northern states brace for heatwave as hospitals report rise in seasonal illnesses.

New Delhi, May 17:
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting continued rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across several regions of India for the next five days, providing a potential respite from rising temperatures in some areas.

IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava highlighted that southern states—particularly Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka—will continue to witness consistent rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

“Similar weather conditions are expected in Central India,” Srivastava noted, adding that the Northeastern region, including Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, will also see persistent rain. Meanwhile, parts of Northwestern India may experience thunderstorms alongside heatwave conditions.

In Delhi, residents can expect some short-term relief from the scorching heat. “Thunderstorm activity is likely to develop over Delhi this evening and tomorrow. Light rainfall could cause temperatures to drop slightly, settling around 37 to 39 degrees Celsius,” Srivastava said.

As rising temperatures take a toll on public health, hospitals in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad have reported a surge in patients suffering from seasonal illnesses.

Dr. V Singh, Senior Medical Consultant, said that children were particularly vulnerable. “We’re seeing cases of typhoid, fever, loose motion, colds, and coughs among children. This is common during the start of summer,” he said, warning against consuming outside food due to risks of contamination.

“Street food can often be adulterated, which is why we advise people to avoid it. We’re currently admitting around 25–30 children a day, with total OPD footfall around 200 patients,” he added.

Dr. Rajendra from the ACMS District Hospital also reported a moderate increase in cases of vomiting and diarrhoea. “We’re seeing 2,200 to 2,500 patients daily with various ailments. About 90 to 100 patients are being admitted. The heat is having an effect, but it’s still under control,” he said.

With unpredictable weather patterns across the country and rising concerns over heat-related illnesses, both the IMD and healthcare officials continue to advise the public to remain alert and take preventive measures.
