Updated: May 2, 2025 | Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) were lashed by intense rainfall, hailstorms, and violent squally winds early Friday morning, disrupting life and flight operations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the region, forecasting continued extreme weather through the day.

🌪️ Squalls, Hailstorms and Power Gusts Hit City

  • Between 5:30 am and 5:50 am, Pragati Maidan witnessed squalls up to 78 kmph.
  • Winds exceeding 50 kmph were recorded in:
    • IGNOU (52 kmph)
    • Najafgarh (56 kmph)
    • Lodhi Road (59 kmph)
    • Pitampura (59 kmph)
  • Hailstorms were also reported in several areas across Delhi-NCR.

Multiple localities experienced heavy waterlogging, including Lajpat Nagar, RK Puram, and Dwarka, causing traffic snarls and property damage.

Delhi International Airport (IGI) issued a weather advisory via X (formerly Twitter), confirming delays and disruptions:

“Due to thunderstorms and adverse weather conditions, some flights have been affected. Passengers are advised to check directly with airlines.”

Air India and IndiGo also shared updates urging travellers to stay informed on real-time flight statuses.


⚠️ IMD Issues Thunderstorm Warnings Across India

The IMD has forecast severe thunderstorms, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall for multiple regions across India:

  • North India: Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, southwest Rajasthan
  • East India: Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal
  • South India: North coastal Andhra Pradesh

In Odisha, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Rayagada districts face imminent threats from lightning and winds of 60–70 kmph. Damage to crops, power lines, and temporary structures is expected. Authorities are urging people to seek shelter, stay away from trees, and avoid travel.

Thanks to the storm system, Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to stay below 40°C for the next few days. IMD predicts continued spells of rain and thunderstorms, likely bringing more temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave.
