Weather Update: Monsoon Keeps Delhi Waiting, Rains Intensify in Kerala; Orange Alert in Himachal From June 29

As monsoon rains batter Kerala and Himachal braces for heavy downpours, Delhi continues to wait for its first full spell of monsoon despite persistent cloud cover.

New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram/Shimla, June 27, 2025 — The monsoon continues its uneven advance across India, with stark contrasts in weather activity. While Delhi is still awaiting its first proper rain of the season, Kerala is battling flooding and Himachal Pradesh is on alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts intensified rainfall.

  • Thunderstorm with rain is forecast for Friday (June 27).
  • The monsoon typically arrives in Delhi around June 30, but this year it’s been delayed, similar to 2024 when it arrived on June 28.

IMD predicts a change in pattern soon with the northward shift of the east-west trough, potentially bringing widespread rain to the Delhi-NCR region, southwest Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

The monsoon has intensified in Kerala, triggering red alerts in Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur. An orange alert has been issued in seven more districts.

  • Rivers like Muvattupuzha, Bharathapuzha, Pamba, Kabani, and others are flowing above danger levels.
  • Low-lying areas in Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Idukki are flooded, displacing hundreds who have been shifted to relief camps.
  • In Wayanad, heavy rains have caused the Chooralmala river to swell dangerously, prompting officials to open the Banasura Sagar dam spillway on Friday.

Himachal Pradesh on Orange Alert from June 29

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Himachal Pradesh starting June 29, with warnings of:

  • Flash floods,
  • Landslides,
  • Rising river levels in Una, Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Kullu, Mandi, and Palampur.

Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at IMD Shimla, confirmed:

“Widespread rainfall has already hit Himachal. Palampur recorded 76 mm, Banjar 75 mm, and Sirmaur 55 mm in the last 24 hours. People must avoid rivers and hillsides due to high landslide risk.”

While a brief relief is expected on June 28, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to resume on June 29 and 30.

Public Advisory

The IMD urges residents and tourists in all affected regions to:

  • Avoid rivers, streams, and steep slopes,
  • Monitor official weather updates,
  • Exercise caution while traveling, especially in hilly and flood-prone areas.
