‘Where Is My Grandson? Dead or Alive?”- Family’s Agony After Techie Atul Subhash’s Suicide

A grieving father demands justice and custody of his grandson as arrests unfold in techie’s tragic suicide case.

December 15, 2024: Bengaluru: Days after the tragic suicide of techie Atul Subhash, his grieving family has raised grave concerns about the whereabouts of his four-year-old son. Atul’s estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, her mother Nisha Singhania, and brother Anurag Singhania have been arrested for alleged abetment to suicide. However, Atul’s father, Pawan Kumar Modi, now fears for his grandson’s safety.

“Is My Grandson Dead or Alive?”

Speaking to the media, a heartbroken Mr. Modi thanked the police for the arrests but voiced his deepest fear:
“We don’t know where she has kept our grandson. Has he been killed or is he alive? We don’t know anything about him. I want my grandson to be with us,” he pleaded, choking back tears.

The family has refused to immerse Atul’s ashes until they receive justice. “We are religious, but we will not immerse his ashes till we get justice,” Mr. Modi said, further alleging corruption in the Jaunpur family court, which, he claimed, contributed to Atul’s despair.

The Final Wishes

Atul Subhash, 34, was found dead in his Bengaluru home last Monday. In a 24-page suicide note, he outlined his last wishes, one of which read: “Give custody of my child to my parents who can raise him with better values.”

Atul accused Nikita, her family, and their associates of harassment, extortion, and legal exploitation. He detailed how false cases of cruelty had been filed against him and that Nikita demanded ₹ 3 crore to settle the case. The court had mandated a monthly payment of ₹ 80,000 as maintenance, but she allegedly pressured him for ₹ 2 lakh.

A Family’s Appeal

Atul’s father and brother have made emotional appeals to national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, to ensure justice and grant them custody of Atul’s son.
“I have only seen him on video calls, never held him close. For a grandfather, his grandson is more special than his son,” Mr. Modi said, his voice breaking.

Atul’s brother Bikas Kumar, who filed the complaint, emphasized their urgency: “Our biggest concern right now is to know where my nephew is. I thank the police for their efforts so far, but some arrests are still pending.”

Legal Developments

Nikita, her mother, and brother were arrested, brought to Bengaluru, and remanded to police custody for 14 days. The fourth accused, Sushil Singhania, remains absconding.

Atul’s suicide note also criticized the legal system, saying it unfairly favored women. “The more I work hard and become better at my work, the more I and my family will be harassed and extorted… I may have destroyed my body but it has saved everything I believe in,” he wrote.

Ongoing Investigation

The case has sparked widespread attention, raising questions about family disputes, legal processes, and emotional exploitation. As investigations continue, Atul’s family remains steadfast in their demand for justice and the return of their grandson.
