Why Is the UK Scrambling After the Ahmedabad Plane Crash?

June 12, 2025: In the wake of the devastating crash of Air India Flight AI171, which was bound for London and crashed moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad, the United Kingdom has extended support and expressed deep concern for the victims.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said he was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy and confirmed that Britain is working closely with Indian authorities to gather facts and provide necessary support. In a statement shared on X, he added, “My thoughts are with all those affected.”

Earlier, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as “devastating,” noting that the aircraft carried many British nationals. “I am being kept updated as the situation develops, and my thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time,” he posted.

Air India confirmed that Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, departed from Ahmedabad at 1:38 PM IST and crashed within minutes in the Meghaninagar area, just beyond the airport perimeter.

There were 242 people onboard, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese passengers. The aircraft was commanded by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, with over 8,200 flight hours, and assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had 1,100 flight hours.

According to Air Traffic Control, the plane issued a MAYDAY call shortly after takeoff from Runway 23, but then lost communication. Seconds later, the aircraft plummeted to the ground, sending thick black smoke into the sky.

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has dispatched a team to investigate. Meanwhile, rescue teams and emergency services continue operations at the crash site.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed by Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and Home Minister Amit Shah, who have both been instructed to oversee relief efforts and ensure immediate assistance to affected families.

Air India has also set up a dedicated passenger helpline (1800 5691 444) for inquiries and support.
