Administration negotiates with Swami Vimukteshwaranand amid Maghi Mela standoff

January 30, 2026: The controversy surrounding Shankaracharya Swami Vimukteshwaranand continues as the administration intensifies efforts to persuade him to take part in the Sangam bath during the Maghi Mela. Senior officials are reportedly acting as mediators, holding talks with the aim of resolving the impasse through dialogue and mutual respect. The administration is keen to prevent further escalation and ensure the smooth conduct of the religious festival.

Swami Vimukteshwaranand left Prayagraj for Varanasi on January 28 following protests that began after the Muni Amavasya bath incident on January 18. The dispute stems from clashes between the Shankaracharya’s supporters and the police during his ceremonial procession to the Sangam. Currently staying in Varanasi with his disciples, the Swami has maintained a firm stand, setting two conditions for his participation — a public apology from the officers involved in the altercation and the creation of a formal bathing protocol applicable to all four Shankaracharyas.

While officials have reportedly agreed in principle to these demands, the Shankaracharya has not yet given his final consent. He is scheduled to address a press conference in Varanasi at 11:30 AM today, where he is expected to clarify his position and announce his decision on the Sangam bath. With the Maghi Mela underway, the administration remains under pressure to resolve the issue swiftly and avoid further controversy.
