New Delhi, October 22, 2024: German Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, emphasized India’s critical role in global climate change efforts while speaking at the ‘NDTV World Summit 2024: The India Century.’ Ackermann highlighted that any attempt to combat climate change would be futile without India’s involvement, given its status as the world’s most populous country and a major economic player.
“Without India, any fight against climate change is useless, because India is the most populous country in the world. Without India, this equation will not work,” said Ackermann. He pointed out that India, alongside Germany, has embarked on a partnership focused on green and sustainable development, reflecting a mutual commitment to tackling environmental challenges. Ackermann praised the Indian private sector for its proactive role, particularly in the renewable energy sector, which he described as “remarkable.”
Global Leadership and UN Reforms Ackermann further discussed India’s growing influence on the global stage, underscoring the need for reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). He reiterated that Europe, especially Germany, recognizes India’s rightful place as a major international actor. “India has to step up on the international stage… Germany, India, Brazil, and Japan, the G4, are fighting for a seat at the UN Security Council, and we hope that there’s reform coming up of these international organizations,” Ackermann said.
Upcoming Visit by Chancellor Scholz The German Ambassador’s comments come ahead of the official visit by Chancellor Olaf Scholz to India for the 7th Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC) from October 24-26, 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Scholz will co-chair the IGC, with senior ministers from both nations participating. The discussions will focus on enhanced security cooperation, economic collaboration, and advancements in green technology and strategic sectors.
In addition, the two leaders will address the 18th Asia Pacific Conference of German Business (APK 2024) in New Delhi, an event expected to further strengthen trade ties between the two nations. Later, Chancellor Scholz will visit Goa, where German naval ships will make a scheduled port call, showcasing Germany’s commitment to Indo-Pacific engagement.
India’s Leadership under PM Modi Reflecting on India’s international standing, Ackermann lauded India’s leadership, particularly under PM Modi’s stewardship during the country’s recent G20 Presidency. “India has proven itself before also, but especially in the last 10 years… India excelled and showed what weight it has on the international stage. Without India, the G20 would not have been possible,” he said, referencing India’s successful navigation of complex geopolitical issues during the summit.
Strengthening India-Germany Ties The strategic partnership between India and Germany has grown significantly since its inception in 2000, expanding across various sectors. Both countries are celebrating 50 years of collaboration in science and technology this year. The upcoming visit by Chancellor Scholz is expected to further deepen this partnership, paving the way for greater cooperation in emerging technologies and sustainable development.
