World’s Longest Jam! 300-Km Traffic Jam at Maha Kumbh 2025: Devotees Stranded for 48 Hours

Massive traffic congestion around Prayagraj disrupts movement, with delays stretching over two days and police struggling to manage the chaos.

February 10, 2025: Prayagraj:
The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 has brought Prayagraj to a standstill, with traffic jams stretching as long as 300 km on routes leading to the holy city. Devotees from Varanasi, Lucknow, and Kanpur have been caught in gridlock for up to 48 hours, with some taking 10-12 hours to cover just 50 km. The congestion has overwhelmed both local authorities and travelers, creating chaos in the region.

Police in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh have temporarily halted vehicle movement on roads leading to Prayagraj, citing the unmanageable traffic. “It’s impossible to move towards Prayagraj today, as there is a 200-300 km traffic jam,” an officer said. Reports suggest the city’s internal roads are also clogged, with jams extending up to seven kilometers near the Mela site.

Prayagraj Sangam Station Shut Down

To prevent further chaos, authorities have closed Prayagraj Sangam railway station. Passengers struggled to exit due to heavy crowds outside the station, prompting Northern Railway to implement a single-direction traffic system at Prayagraj Junction.

Kuldeep Tiwari, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Northern Railway), Lucknow, stated, “The station closure was necessary to ensure passenger safety amid the massive crowd.”

Authorities and Public React

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Kuldeep Singh blamed the congestion on the overwhelming number of vehicles trying to get as close as possible to the Mela site. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for failing to manage the event effectively, highlighting shortages of essential commodities in the city.

Despite the traffic woes, authorities revealed that over 46 lakh devotees took a dip in the Sangam on the same day, with a total of 44 crore pilgrims visiting since the Maha Kumbh began last month.
