Yamuna Water Row: Haryana CM Drinks ‘Poisoned’ Water Amid Controversy-Watch

Nayab Saini challenges AAP’s claims by sipping Yamuna water, sparking a political storm ahead of Delhi elections.

January 29, 2025: The Yamuna water controversy escalated on Wednesday as Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini drank water directly from the river at Delhi’s Palla village, countering allegations of contamination raised by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In a viral video, the BJP leader splashed water on himself and confidently sipped it, dismissing claims of “poison” in the water.

“I drank the holy Yamuna water on the Haryana border. (Delhi Chief Minister) Atishiji did not come. She must be concocting another lie. But lies have no legs, and AAP’s deceit will fail,” Mr. Saini said on X. He also accused AAP of misleading Delhi residents, claiming their “era of deceit” would end with the Assembly election on February 5.

The 57-second video shows Mr. Saini repeating his gestures, sipping the water, and consulting aides with files. The act was a direct response to allegations by AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, who accused Haryana’s government of contaminating Delhi’s water supply with high ammonia levels.

AAP branded the situation as “water terrorism,” drawing sharp rebuttals from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who declared, “I drink the same water. My party wouldn’t dare poison it.” The BJP accused Kejriwal of spreading panic, vowing legal action.

The Election Commission also stepped in, asking Kejriwal to provide evidence of his claims by 8 PM, warning of a three-year jail term for unsubstantiated allegations. Meanwhile, the Delhi Jal Board dismissed Kejriwal’s statements as “factually incorrect and baseless.”

As the debate intensifies, the controversy has become a flashpoint in the BJP-AAP rivalry, fueling political tension in the run-up to the Delhi Assembly elections.
