Scattered showers and winds up to 50 km/h expected Friday night; dry but cloudy weather likely to follow through early next week
New Delhi, May 9 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi and surrounding NCR areas for Friday night, warning of scattered light rainfall and strong gusty winds. The alert comes as a western disturbance continues to influence weather in north India, though its intensity is gradually fading.
According to IMD officials, wind speeds could rise to 30–40 km/h, with gusts possibly reaching 50 km/h by late evening. Parts of southwest Delhi, including Palam, received 5.3 mm of rain between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on Friday. Other areas like Mayur Vihar and Lodhi Road recorded trace rainfall over the last 24 hours.

“The western disturbance’s impact will likely linger through Saturday, bringing very light rain during the day,” said an IMD official. “However, no colour-coded alert will be issued for Saturday, and conditions are expected to stabilize from Sunday onward.”
Despite the rainfall, Delhi’s maximum temperature on Friday remained below normal at 36.7°C—three degrees under the seasonal average. The minimum temperature was 25.7°C, a notch above normal. Forecasts indicate the weekend will remain cloudy with temperatures fluctuating between 36°C and 39°C, and minimums ranging from 26°C to 28°C.
Air quality in the national capital also saw improvement. The 24-hour average AQI stood at 151 (moderate) on Friday afternoon, down from 169 on Thursday.
Mahesh Palawat of private forecaster Skymet noted, “The system is weakening and shifting northward. While isolated spells and gusty winds may occur in pockets of Delhi NCR, the bulk of the western disturbance’s effect is tapering off. Cloud cover is expected to persist until Tuesday.”
May has already seen significant rainfall in Delhi, primarily due to a record 77 mm downpour on May 2—making it the second-highest single-day rainfall for the month.
