New Zealand’s Bowlers Shine to Set Up T20 World Cup Final Against South Africa

Sharjah [UAE], October 19, 2024: New Zealand secured a thrilling victory over West Indies in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final on Friday, setting up an epic final clash against South Africa. Despite a late scare from Deandra Dottin, the White Ferns’ spinners, led by Eden Carson and Melie Kerr, held their nerve to guide the team to victory in Sharjah.

Batting first, New Zealand managed to post 128/9, with Georgia Plimmer top-scoring with a gritty 33. The West Indies’ chase looked promising when Deandra Dottin began to unleash her power, smashing three sixes in a single over. However, her dismissal for 33 off 22 balls proved to be the turning point, as New Zealand tightened their grip on the game.

Reflecting on the intense contest, New Zealand’s Sophie Devine said, “When Dottin was out there, anything was possible. But credit to the girls, they stayed calm and got the job done. We’re thrilled to have made it to the final.”

New Zealand’s spinners were instrumental in the win, with Eden Carson taking 3/29 and Melie Kerr delivering a masterclass with 2/14, including the prized wicket of Dottin. “We had to roll the dice with Melie to try and get Dottin out, and thankfully, it worked,” Devine added.

West Indies had their moments, particularly during a blistering over from Dottin, who took 23 runs off Lea Tahuhu to keep the chase alive. But a crucial bowling change saw Suzie Bates handed the ball for the final over, and she delivered under pressure, cleaning up Zaida James to seal the victory.

Earlier, New Zealand opted to bat first, and while Suzie Bates (26) and Georgia Plimmer (33) laid a solid foundation, the West Indies bowlers struck back, led by Karishma Ramharack and Afy Fletcher. Tight bowling and regular wickets kept the Kiwis from accelerating, but a late cameo from Isabella Gaze (20* off 14) pushed the total to 128/9.

The win means New Zealand will now face South Africa in Sunday’s final, ensuring a new champion will be crowned. Fans can expect a thrilling showdown as both teams battle it out for their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup title.
