December 25, 2024: A passenger plane operated by Azerbaijan Airlines crashed and burst into flames near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan, according to the country’s Emergencies Ministry. The Embraer 190 aircraft was en route from Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, to Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya but was rerouted due to heavy fog in Grozny
Eyewitness footage captured the plane rapidly losing altitude, banking sharply to the right, and crashing into an open field where it caught fire. Reports suggest that the aircraft had circled the area several times, attempting an emergency landing before stalling and crashing approximately three kilometers from Aktau Airport.
There were 62 passengers and five crew members on board at the time of the incident. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the crash site, with visuals showing ambulances and rescuers assisting survivors as they exited through an emergency rear door.
Azerbaijan Airlines, the national flag carrier, confirmed that the plane made an emergency landing attempt but provided no immediate details about casualties. Aktau, located on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea, serves as a vital oil and gas hub.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash, and updates on casualties and survivors are awaited.
