Carlos Alcaraz Cruises Into Wimbledon Third Round With Straight-Sets Win Over British Qualifier
London [UK], July 3: Defending champion and world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive form at Wimbledon 2024, advancing to the third round with a dominant 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win over British qualifier Oliver Tarvet on Wednesday. The victory extends Alcaraz’s career-best winning streak to 20 matches and reinforces his quest to become only the second man in the Open Era to achieve a French Open-Wimbledon double in consecutive years.
After surviving a five-set thriller in the opening round against 38-year-old Fabio Fognini, Alcaraz was far more composed and clinical in his first-ever match against world No. 733 Tarvet, showcasing his elite shot-making and focus.
Alcaraz, now undefeated in his last 16 matches at Wimbledon, was effusive in his praise for the British wildcard.
“I have to give praise to Oliver, his second match on the Tour. I just love his game, to be honest,” Alcaraz told ATP.com after the match.
“The level he played in the first match on Centre Court, which I know is really difficult, was great tennis. I knew at the beginning I had to be really focused, had to play my best tennis. Today I played just great tennis and I am really happy with my game today.”
The Spaniard blasted 37 winners and broke Tarvet’s serve six times in a commanding performance on Centre Court. Alcaraz has now become the fastest player in the Open Era to reach 30 grass-court wins, surpassing that milestone during his first-round win and extending it to 31 victories with Wednesday’s performance.
Despite the pressure of defending his title and a shot at history, Alcaraz remains grounded.
“I found the right way to try and enjoy after every match,” he said.
“When I step on the court, I am just trying to enjoy. It doesn’t matter if I am winning or losing. That is the key for the past two or three months, having a great consecutive winning streak, and I am just enjoying.”
Alcaraz will face either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round, depending on the outcome of their match.
At just 21 years old, Alcaraz is on the brink of joining elite company. He is aiming to become:
Should he succeed at SW19 this year, it would mark his sixth title of the 2024 season, adding to his French Open crown and his second Queen’s Club title won earlier this month.
With his all-court game, mental composure, and joy for tennis, Carlos Alcaraz is not just defending his crown — he’s redefining dominance on grass.
