Donald Trump Sparks Global Controversy with Remarks on Acquiring Greenland, Canada, and Panama Canal

Trump’s recent social media posts proposing US control over Greenland, Canada, and the Panama Canal ignite backlash from global leaders.

Washington DC [US], December 25: In a series of provocative social media posts, US President-elect Donald Trump has sparked global controversy by expressing interest in acquiring Greenland, Canada, and reclaiming control over the Panama Canal, citing national security and economic advantages as key motivations.

In one such post, Trump’s son Eric Trump shared an image depicting Donald Trump purchasing Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal, captioning it: “We are so back!!!”

Greenland Controversy

Trump reiterated his long-standing interest in Greenland, calling US control over the territory an “absolute necessity” for national security.

“For purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

The statement drew a sharp response from Rasmus Jarlov, a Member of Denmark’s Conservative Party, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize Trump’s remarks.

“Not sure whether it is a joke or not. But certainly not funny. Greenland is Danish. It has been since 1380 and it will continue to be. This is undisputed, signed in rock in treaties and not open for negotiation at all,” Jarlov posted.

Panama Canal Remarks

On Truth Social, Trump also addressed the Panama Canal, suggesting it should return to US control if not managed according to “moral and legal principles.”

“Welcome to the United States Canal! The Panama Canal is considered a vital national asset for the United States, due to its critical role to America’s economy and national security,” Trump wrote.

Responding firmly, Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino stated, “Every square meter of the Panama Canal and the surrounding area belongs to Panama and will continue belonging so.”

Canada as the 51st State

Trump’s earlier remarks suggesting that Canada become the 51st state of the United States have also caused diplomatic ripples.

“Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!” Trump declared on Truth Social.

These bold statements have stirred global backlash, with international leaders condemning the rhetoric as inflammatory and dismissing the feasibility of such proposals. As Trump’s presidency approaches, the geopolitical landscape appears poised for heightened tensions and scrutiny.
