In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed, “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!”

This comment follows a turbulent week in Canadian politics, marked by the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, which has fueled speculation about the stability of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government. While some Canadians laughed off Trump’s remarks, others found them unsettling and inappropriate given the political uncertainty.

A Leger survey revealed that 13% of Canadians are open to the idea of closer integration with the United States, though many dismissed Trump’s comments as a form of political trolling. Trump has previously expressed frustration with Canada over fentanyl trafficking, threatening to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods. He has also criticized the US-Canada trade balance, claiming the United States subsidizes Canada by “over $1 billion a year.” Economists, however, refute this figure, noting that the $53.5 billion trade deficit is insignificant compared to the $909 billion in total bilateral trade.
In response to Trump’s comments, Canadian officials have taken measures to address border security and immigration concerns, including hiring additional officers and aligning Canada’s asylum system more closely with US policies. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc assured that discussions with Trump and his team remain “productive” despite the provocations.
Annexation Unlikely
Experts widely agree that the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state is far-fetched. Stephanie Chouinard, a professor at Queen’s University, suggested that Trump’s remarks are a strategic effort to exploit Canada’s political instability to pressure Trudeau.
