Donald Trump's Record-Breaking Inauguration: Invitation to Xi, VIP Passes Scramble, and More

"Trump’s swearing-in as the 47th US President sees invites to world leaders, record-breaking donations, and sold-out VIP passes."

January 13, 2025: Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States, set for January 20 at the Capitol Building in Washington DC, is shaping up to be a monumental event. With Vice-President JD Vance also taking the oath, the ceremony is drawing global attention as invitations are extended to world leaders, tech moguls, and business tycoons.

India's Representative

External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar will represent India at the swearing-in ceremony, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs. "Dr. S. Jaishankar will also hold meetings with representatives of the incoming administration and other dignitaries visiting the US during this occasion," the ministry said in its statement. The visit is expected to reinforce bilateral ties that have grown significantly in recent years.

Global Invitations

Breaking away from tradition, Trump has extended personal invitations to world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping. While Xi is unlikely to attend, his representatives are expected. Leaders such as El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are also on the guest list, emphasising Trump’s desire to turn the event into a “global stage.”

Corporate Donations Soar

The inauguration has already raised over $170 million in donations, with major corporations like Google, Meta, and Amazon contributing heavily. CEOs like Tim Cook (Apple) and Sam Altman (OpenAI) have each pledged $1 million. The staggering donation figures surpass Trump’s 2017 record of $107 million and dwarf the $62 million raised for Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration.

VIP Pass Frenzy

Demand for VIP passes has exceeded expectations, leaving several top donors without access. High-value packages, which included tickets to exclusive events like a candlelight dinner with Trump and Melania, sold out earlier than planned. Those left without VIP passes are now vying for free public tickets distributed through Congress.

Security and Logistical Challenges

The ambitious scale of the event poses significant challenges for the US Secret Service, tasked with protecting multiple heads of state. Moreover, the informal nature of Trump’s invitations has made tracking attendees difficult even for his closest aides.

As January 20 approaches, the inauguration promises to be a grand spectacle, blending politics, diplomacy, and global intrigue.
