England captain reflects on Eden Gardens loss, highlights team’s focus on aggression and adaptability under McCullum
Kolkata, January 23: After England’s dismal start to their white-ball series against India, captain Jos Buttler reiterated his team’s intent to play “aggressive” and “watchable” cricket. Despite their ambitions, England’s batting faltered against a well-executed Indian bowling attack, resulting in a 7-wicket defeat at Eden Gardens in the first T20I.
India’s Bowling Overpowers England
Expected to deliver a high-scoring thriller, England’s batters struggled against India’s incisive bowling. Arshdeep Singh struck early, removing openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett. Varun Chakravarthy, Eden Gardens’ local favorite, dismantled England’s middle order with his deceptive googlies.
Even with Jos Buttler’s spirited 68 off 44 balls, England could only manage 132 in their 20 overs. India chased down the target comfortably, led by Abhishek Sharma’s explosive innings.
Buttler Finds Positives Amidst the Loss
Buttler acknowledged England’s struggles but also highlighted the team’s silver linings, particularly the performances of pacers Jofra Archer and Mark Wood.
“There was a little in the wicket early on… but it was a good pitch if you came through that phase. Jof looked good, and Mark Wood bowled fast. It was exciting,” Buttler said during the post-match presentation.
Admiration for McCullum’s Approach
Despite the setback, Buttler praised Brendon McCullum’s influence as England’s new white-ball head coach, emphasizing the importance of aggressive play and adapting to conditions.
“We want to be aggressive and watchable, but venue to venue, we’ve got to assess conditions. Enjoyment of the game is always there. I’m a big McCullum fan and always have been. Enjoying working with him,” Buttler shared.
Looking Ahead
After a shaky start to the series, England will regroup as the action moves to Chennai for the second T20I. With the series still open, Buttler and his team will aim to rebound and level the competition.
